They ask, “ Why has no [other] sign been sent down to him from his Lord?” Say, [O Prophet] The knowledge of the unseen is with Allah alone. So wait! I replied, “Of course.” Then he asked: “Do you all know what
al-Absār are?” I replied, “Of course.” Then he asked: “What are they?” I replied, “They are Absār meaning ‘eyes’.” He said, “The mind in your heart is more powerful than the eyes [with which you see]. Thus it is minds that cannot behold him, while He
beholds minds.”
To guide Abu Hashim to the hidden meaning of the verse above, Imam al-Ridha (a) first asks him what he understands from the verse. It is worth mentioning that the word Absār here refers to ‘minds’ . Since ‘minds’ which are our most powerful faculty for knowing, cannot behold Him, thus, we cannot truly describe Him.
